R&D Domains

SOFTWARIZED NETWORKS

“It’s going to be interesting to watch, and to see whether networking companies are going to be software companies” – David Ward

Network Softwarization is enabled by Software Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) paradigms, offering advantages related to the programmability and decoupling of software and hardware to network neutral data centers, telecom operators, and service providers.

Network softwarization applies to both wireless and fixed networks, enabling enhanced 5G architectures such as Radio Access Network (RAN) functional split and Mobile Edge Computing (MEC). Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) will play a central role in management and zero-touch orchestration of softwarized networks, enabling effective, scalable and flexible management. Eight Bells Hellas. brings long research and technical experience through involvement in multiple R&D projects and industry engagements relevant to the areas of 5G Mobile Technology, SDN/NFV and Orchestration solutions for advanced cloud infrastructures (with support of far edge computing and hardware acceleration).

CYBERSECURITY

“Do not act following customary beliefs” – Miyamoto Musashi

Smooth operation of ICT infrastructures should not be taken for granted because malicious parties have always existed and will always exist. Therefore, the protection of data confidentiality, data integrity, and data availability against both known and unknown threats is always our top priority. In this context, Eight Bells Hellas. brings value in three directions: i) a Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) product named ADAM that relies on Artificial Intelligence to protect and ensure that optimal decisions are taken subject to existing and potential threats, ii) a ubiquitous Situational Awareness monitoring platform for modern ICT ecosystems that takes into consideration the variety of the deployed services and devices, iii) a Cyber Range solution that ensures proper training and keeps cybersecurity awareness at high level, thus avoiding attacks relying on human behavior, the weakest link of the cybersecurity chain.

IoT AND SENSORS

“Everything that can be automated will be automated.” — Robert Cannon

The IoT and Sensors department specializes in:

      • Printed Circuit Boards (PCB) design, development and programming. The boards can house a variety of peripherals such as sensors, cameras, microphones, monitors and more and can be used in various scenarios, providing the ability to collect multiple types of data for remote monitoring, edge processing and storage applications.
      • RF and Microwave components design and development, such as low-profile planar RF structures, Frequency Selective Surfaces (FSS), wearable antennas and high-frequency PCB boards that integrate filters and mmWave transceivers.
      • 3D printing of dielectric and conductive materials for applications such as electromagnetically equivalent human body phantoms, biocompatible coatings for medical devices and high durability enclosures of IoT devices. The target of the 3D printing services is to perform quick and low-cost prototyping, have flexibility in design and material options and reduce dead time between prototype versions.

OPTICAL NETWORKS

“Nature decrees that we do not exceed the speed of light. All other impossibilities are optional.” – Robert Brault

The mission of the Optical Networks domain is to perform research and also to develop, test and supply products employing photonics as their core technology. Eight Bells Hellas team members are experienced engineers and scientists with strong track record in the fields of Photonic Sensing and Devices, Optical Communications & Networks, Free Space Optical Systems, Intersatellite optical links, and Quantum communications. The group’s approach is multidisciplinary and technology intensive, acting in close collaboration with the other R&I departments of the company like IoT & Sensors (photonic & quantum sensing/computing), Softwarized Networks (convergence of 5G Comms with Photonic networks) and Cybersecurity (Quantum Key Distribution technology). Further, the team collaborates closely with world leaders in the field, foreign companies, and research centers/academic labs. Eight Bells Hellas is a member of the Greek Photonics Cluster HPhos.

AI & SOFTWARE SOLUTIONS

“It seems probable that once the machine thinking method had started, it would not take long to outstrip our feeble powers” – Alan Turing

Artificial Intelligence provides forecasts and better optimization. By combining various data sources, automated algorithms can deliver accurate predictions and solve complex real-world challenges. The AI and Software Solutions domain of Eight bells Hellas specializes in the design and implementation of cutting-edge software powered by next generation explainable AI. In the crossroads of AI research, Big Data analytics and Digital Transformation our team automates processes, provides intelligent business insights, and increases the competitive advantage of our clients in a wide variety of business disciplines (i.e., Public Sector, Defense, Manufacturing, Healthcare, Retail, Fintech).

SPACE - DEFENCE - SECURITY

“I know the sky is not the limit because there are footprints on the Moon — and I made some of them!” – Buzz Aldrin

Eight Bells Hellas perceives business activities in space to be both cooperative and competitive, but always with a meaningful intersection for tangible mutual benefits between us and our valued partners. Space is the most recent domain of human activity, becoming the focus of our collective efforts to consolidate and optimize Access (launch, orbit, landing), Presence (satellites, spacecrafts, people), and Operation (payloads, mission, users), outside of our planet. Still, it is a harsh and complex environment that poses all kinds of challenges for human activities at both operational and technical level. As Space missions always start from the ground and return their result back to Earth, they become a major driver for our society and economy, fueling science, technology, applications and a wide range of services. Eight Bells Hellas employs proven capabilities and brings extensive hands-on experience in ICT and Defense & Security to address effectively the reality of delivering added value research, providing actionable advice and sensible business in Space. In this sense, our company aims to be an integral and active part of the national and European space ecosystem and this includes the capacity to participate or coordinate Horizon Europe research & innovation activities, as well as European Space Agency (ESA) and European Defence Agency (EDA) projects. Our experts cover Satellite Communications (SatCom), Earth Observation (EO) and Positioning Navigation & Timing (PNT) systems and applications. We promote a cross-domain approach and we strive to define, design, and place at the market reliable products and services.
